KOŠICE - JACOB'S PALACE

kosice

Jakob's palace, on the corner of Mlynská and Štefánikova streets, is one of the most beautiful and important monuments of the historical centre of Košice.
The building from 1899 is built in the Neo-Gothic style and looks like a fairy-tale castle with a hint of similarity to the Prague Towers and other famous European medieval mansions. Local architect and entrepreneur, engineer Arpád Jakab, was inspired by medieval buildings when building his residence and used discarded construction material from the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, which remained after the reconstruction.
Originally, the house stood in a quiet part of the city and until 1968 near Mlynský náhon. Until 1908, the house was occupied by the family of Arpád Jakab. After that, the Jewish family of Hugo Barkanyi became the new owners, who were during World War II evicted from the house. During the spring of 1945, Jakab's Palace became the temporary residence of the President of the Czechoslovak Republic, Dr. Edvard Beneš. Currently, the building is under the administration of the city of Košice and is not accessible to the public.
