The University of Žilina in Žilina was established on September 1, 1953 from the Czech Technical University in Prague as the Railway University. It had 5 faculties: transport, construction, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and military. By renaming the Railway College in 1959, the Transport College was established in Prague, which was relocated from Prague to Žilina on September 6, 1960.
The University of Žilina in Žilina is one of the leading educational and scientific research institutions in Slovakia. With its rich tradition, it occupies an important place among Slovak universities, not only in terms of the number of students, the offer of interesting and high-quality study programmes, but especially in terms of significant research and foreign activity. The current university is no longer oriented only to transport and telecommunications. It is a broadly conceived university focused on Slovak conditions in a unique university location called Veľké Dielo. It has seven faculties (economics of transport and telecommunications, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology, safety engineering, management and informatics, humanities). The university also includes workplaces: Research Institute of High mountain Biology, Institute of Physical Education, Institute of Expert Research and Education, Centre of Information and telecommunication Technologies, Institute of Lifelong Education, Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation, Aviation Training and Education Centre, University Science Park and Research Centre of the University of Žilina in Žilina.
The picture shows an Art Nouveau building that was built in 1911-1912. It originally housed a high school for natural sciences and living languages, later an eleven-year secondary school. Slovak has been taught in its premises since 1919. In 1960, it housed the Railway College, which was moved from Prague. Currently, the national cultural monument is under reconstruction. After the reconstruction, it will serve as a centre for the popularization of science and technology.
