biatec

The new edition of Euro Souvenir is published on the occasion of the opening of the new BIATEC permanent exhibition. Celtic Mint. The exhibition was prepared by the Bratislava City Gallery in cooperation with the Municipal Institute for the Protection of Monuments in Bratislava, with the aim of presenting the local cultural heritage of the Celtic civilization to the public through visual stories.

Since the 18th century, 7 hoards of gold and silver coins, staters, drachms, didrachms, tetradrachms, obols and a large number of rare coin finds have been found on the territory of Bratislava. Research at Panská Street 19 brought an important discovery, namely findings, evidence confirming the activity of the Celtic mint in these places. The Bratislava Celts were exceptional in that, in addition to various pictorial motifs and symbols, mostly of a religious and mythological nature, they also had inscriptions stamped on their coins. These are also the oldest evidence of the use of the Latin script - capitals - in our territory. We know a total of 16 inscriptions on the largest silver coins, the so-called tetradrachms, which according to linguistic analysis may be the personal names of rulers and monarchs.

The most common is the B I AT E C inscription, according to which they got the name "biateks". Don't miss this unique combination of coins and bills.
