BOJNICE CASTLE

bojnice

The second edition of BOJNICKÝ ZÁMOK is almost sold out. An edition in the order of the third motif is being prepared for sale.
One of the most beautiful and famous castles in Slovakia is even one of the oldest and most important in Slovakia. Built on an exceptional site formed by a travertine foundation surrounded by a moat, it has been a popular destination for tourists for several decades. The first written mention of the original, probably only wooden castle, comes from the Zoborská charter of King Koloman from 1113. At the end of the 13th century, the stone castle was already controlled by Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, and during its colourful history it repeatedly changed owners and important families. In the 16th century, the castle was owned by the Turzo's family, who rebuilt it into a Renaissance residence. In the 17th century, the Pálfi family contributed to the baroque style, although substantial construction work was also carried out at the castle during the 18th and 19th centuries. Its last noble owner was Ján Pálfi, to whom we owe the extraordinary form of the romantic chateau as we know it today. The inspiration for its reconstruction and new look were French castles, as well as Italian and Tyrolean mansions and their architectural elements. The last neo-Gothic reconstruction took place until 1910, but Count Pálfi did not live to see it. He died childless in 1908, which resulted in disputes between his relatives and later in an agreement with the Czechoslovak state.
Despite the fact that Pálfi himself was interested in making the castle and its valuable collections available to the public and had this will recorded in his will, the inheriting relatives did not respect it and sold off part of the property. However, the artistic heritage protected by agreements with the state managed to be preserved. A devastating fire on May 9, 1950 significantly damaged the castle. However, thanks to the extraordinary interest in repairing the castle and making it available as a museum, the castle avoided the fate of other monuments that were left without interest as they were damaged by fire. The importance and value of the castle contributed to the quick solution and restoration of the damaged architecture. Already on September 2, 1951, the first exhibition at the castle was opened to the public. Since 1970, Bojnice Castle has been a national cultural monument. Today, the Bojnice Museum is under the administration of the Slovak National Museum. The neighbouring national zoo, the nature of Bojnice as a spa town and other tourist opportunities in the vicinity create exceptional conditions for tourism.
Valuable collection items, decoration of individual halls, interior elements together with architecture are highly valuable. Any part of the history of the original castle, or the current castle and the operation of the museum, can bring visitors an interesting interpretation. Bojnice Castle, as a visually extremely attractive place, played a significant role in the first animated colour fairy tale Sir and the Stargazer (1959) and in the fairy tale The Crazy Sad Princess (1968) with Helena Vondráčková in the main role. It featured Brigitte Nielsen in the role of an evil queen fighting against Princess Fantagirhó (1992). Most recently, it was used for the filmmakers of the fairy tales Johankino tajomstvo (Johanna's secret) (2015) and O liečivej vode (About healing water) (2020).
