0 Euro Souvenir Grammar school in Michalovce – 100th anniversary of its establishment
The first efforts or attempts to establish a gymnasium-type school in Michalovce date back to the times of Austria-Hungary, to the beginning of the 20th century, but in the end they were not successful. After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Slovak part of Zemplín was left without a high school. However, the representatives of the new state promised that such schools would be established in this territory. Among the towns of Michalovce, Humenné and Trebišov, the first named finally succeeded.
The state real grammar school with the teaching language Slovak - "Czechoslovak" - in Michalovce was established on September 22, 1922, and its official opening took place on October 2, 1922. The first class was established in the school year 1922/1923. Otakar Formánek - a Czech teacher - was entrusted with the management of the new school in Michalovce. Enrolment in the first class took place on October 9 and 10, regular classes began on October 11, 1922. Due to space reasons, 39 students were accepted, two more joined during the school year.
The ceremonial opening of the "easternmost Slovak grammar school" took place on October 12, 1922, in the hall of the Zlatý býk hotel on the main Michalovská Street, with numerous guests attending.
In the first school year, the teaching staff had 5 members - in addition to the director. The first high school students were initially educated in different buildings, they were also involved in various associations or clubs, rehearsing programs for cultural and social events. However, studying was not easy at all - out of the first 41 students in the 1929/1930 school year, only 12 successfully graduated...
As provisional conditions still prevailed, the construction of a new purpose-built school building appeared increasingly urgent. After lengthy preparations, on November 17, 1928, the foundation stone of the gymnasium building was ceremoniously laid on the allocated plot of land. The project of the two-story functionalist building and the house for the director was developed by the Prague architect Petr Kropáček, the construction itself was carried out between 1929 and 1931 by the firm of Jaroslav Bursík from Prague. The total costs reached over 8 million crowns. Its ceremonial opening took place in the second half of October 1931.
Since then, the institution has had different names, other educational institutions were also located in its premises. From November 1980 until today, the school bears the name Pavol Horov Grammar School.
Currently - in the school year 2021/2022 - the school has 24 classes and 620 pupils, who are educated by 54 teachers, the principal Katarína Olšavová is already the 17th since the beginning.
Graduates are scattered literally all over the world, many are inspiring people. They broke through in science, art, business... Several personalities who either taught or studied here are connected to the school.
Today's Pavol Horov Grammar School represents a modern educational institution with a respectable tradition that adheres to the motto "Gens una sumus", i.e. "We are one family".
