On Saturday, November 6, 2021, the sale of the Euro Souvenir with the MICHAL MARTIKÁN motif will begin, which is issued to mark the 25th anniversary of winning the first Olympic gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games for independent Slovakia.
Michal Martikán is the first Olympic champion in the modern history of Slovakia, and at the same time, he was the youngest ever to win the first Olympic gold medal. As the only water slalom skier in the world, he won medals at five Olympic Games. He is a two-time Olympic champion in water slalom from the Atlanta 1996 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and the holder of two silver medals from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Athens 2004, and one bronze medal from the London 2012 Olympic Games. He is a 15-time world champion, eleven times in the C2 category, and a 15-time European champion, 11 times in the C2 category. He won his first bronze medal from the world championships at the age of 16, making him the youngest world championship medallist in history. He is also a 5-time overall World Cup winner in water slalom with 20 World Cup titles. A total of 43 medals from World Cup races. So far, a total of 51 medals from top events, Olympic Games, World and European Championships. He is a 4-time winner of the Sportsman of the Year award.
