The Central Slovak Museum

ssm-v3

The Central Slovak Museum, in cooperation with the Department of Culture of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region and the NUNOFIA company, has prepared a continuation of its 0 Euro Souvenirs series on the occasion of the opening of the new permanent exhibition Tranzithistory.
In addition to the building of Thurzo's house itself, there is also a statue of a medieval miner by the famous Slovak sculptor and academic painter Vladimír Kompánek. The perfect artistic execution already appealed to visitors at the exhibition for the 700th anniversary of the establishment of the town under Urpín hill in 1955. The 135-centimeter-high statue of a miner in period clothing on a square plinth is made of patinated plaster. It has also acquired its dominant position in the upcoming new permanent exhibition Tranzithistory.
Thurzo's house belongs to the important architectural monuments of Banská Bystrica. For centuries, it has been part of the main square and the historical core of the city, which was declared a monument reserve in 1955. Thurzo's house earned its significant historical status in connection with the personality of Ján Thurzo, a native of Betlan and a Krakow businessman. In the years 1495 - 1548, the important Thurzovská - Fugger mining company had its headquarters in the house. During the Slovak National Uprising, the house was hit by an unexploded German aerial bomb. After the war, due to the significant damage, even complete destruction was to follow. Fortunately, its fate was reversed and the house was saved. Since 1958, it has been home to today's Central Slovak Museum, then the Regional Museum of National History, which was founded by the Banskobystricky Self-governing Region. During the last few years, thanks to funds from BBSK, Thurzo's house underwent the largest modern reconstruction, from the underground, facades to a complete change of its interior, where it found its place, in addition to renovated exhibition spaces, e.g. the new permanent exhibition Tranzithistory.
It guides the visitor through the history of Banská Bystrica and its surroundings in a visually appealing way. For decades, Thurzo's house has been the bearer of a historical legacy for generations of Slovaks and all residents of our beautiful and historically rich country.
